The UK Government has announced a £4 million investment in a new initiative focused on generative AI, designed to alleviate the workload of teachers. This project will compile government documents, such as curriculum guidelines, lesson plans, and anonymised student assessments, to train AI systems. The main objective is to create AI tools that help educators with grading, developing classroom resources, and handling routine administrative duties. This will enable teachers to spend more time engaging with students and lessen their after-hours responsibilities. Despite nearly half of teachers already embracing AI tools, a recent survey by TeacherTapp indicates that these systems have yet to be specifically tailored to the teaching materials used in England. In response to this gap, the initiative will allocate a portion of an additional £1 million to AI companies focused on developing tools for feedback and assessment. This endeavor represents the UK’s inaugural government-approved content store aimed at enhancing educational resources for AI innovation. Its goal is to foster the creation of safe, legally compliant, and evidence-based tools that cater to the unique needs of educators. Chris Goodall, a teacher and Head of Digital Education at the Bourne Education Trust, remarked, “AI has proven to be an incredibly powerful asset for my colleagues and me. It empowers us to craft engaging, personalized learning experiences for our students while significantly reducing the time required to develop them.”
