Apple Inc. has made the difficult decision to reduce its workforce by approximately 100 positions within its digital services division, primarily impacting the team behind the Apple Books app and the Apple Bookstore, as reported by Bloomberg News on Tuesday (27th of August) The layoffs encompass various roles, including engineering positions and staff from other service teams, such as those managing Apple News. Apple has chosen not to comment on this development. The exact size of Apple's services division remains unclear, but the company reported having around 161,000 full-time equivalent employees as of September 30, 2023, according to its latest annual report. This move comes as Apple undergoes a reorganization of its teams in response to evolving priorities, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, the company also paused work on its upcoming high-end Vision headset and discontinued a project aimed at creating its own smartwatch displays. Additionally, Apple has been navigating challenges in China, its third-largest market, where sales fell by 6.5% last quarter.
